My name is Logan Meyer. I name 19 years old and was born and raised in Cincinnati Ohio. I am a freshmen studying secondary education history. I went to Oak Hills High School and left after me junior year to attend Cincinnati Christian University. After my one year year i chose to transfer to uc because I always wanted to be able to go to school here. I am also a very big sports fan of uc. I have season tickets for uc football and also attend many basketball games. This year i have traveled to Nashville to watch the basketball team in the NCAA Tournament and went to Memphis to watch the football team play in the liberty bowl. I do not live on campus because being from cincy i do not live to far away. I also work a part time job during the week. Every weekend pretty much do what all college kids do hang with friends and go out. Game Stations
Civ Revolution: http://www.civilizationrevolution.com/iphone/
This was a role playing game where we as a group choose a charactor from history to be our avator. The content standards this game would fall into would be the Ohio Academic Content Standards in social studies. The reason this game would be placed there is because it is dealing with the interaction of famous people from world history and also it has you be the government of your team. You have to make the choices for when to go to war or what to do for your country. After playing the game i was not a big fan of it. The game had many different opitons and was often giving a lot of reading for the player to do. There was not as much of needed directions. I do believe the game was bulit well and had a good graphic image of game play. In the end it seemed the game was more about playing for fun without any type of real learning taking place.
Great Gatsby Game: http://greatgatsbygame.com/ This game is a type of role playing game. You play as the Great Gatsby and you have to try to make it through your mansion without running into any butlers, people drinking, or dancing. I dont believe this game is able to fall into any true type of content standards. This is becuase the game is based on the book the Great Gatsby but you learn nothing about the book or get any type of review. It was more like a copy cat of the Mario games. Expect you are Gatsby. The game was a bit of fun but nothing was learned. If i was teaching a class about the Great Gatsby i might offer up this game to them for something to do if they finish their work early in class. I would not it as a classroom assignment.
Does technology make a difference in the learning process or could you teach just as well without it?
Are students today fundamentally different than students in the past
1. Technology does truly make a difference in the learning process of students it creates more oppurtunites and advantages. It changes the style of the learning process.
2. Students of today are fundamentally different from students of the past. This is because the students of the past did not have the type of technology in the classroom that students of today do.
Staff can use a after school or weekend web program to give computer time to students.
Find business or community resources that will allow access to computers after school hours.
Let the teachers borrow technologies already eqquipped in the school.
PBL Reflection
Small scale- A small scale example of pbl would be giving the class a problem like the fuel issues in America what should we do. The class in groups must come up with some type of answer on what they would do to slove this in the most effective way. THe reason this is pbl is becuase they amunt of opitions they have to choose from. ALso they must look at opitions and ask questions on why it might be good and why it might not be. IN the end they will have answered many questions as a group in order to answer the one from the beginning. Site Evaluate Tree Octopus
I believe this site to be fake. For one i have never in my life heard of such a thing becuase octopus live in water and the main picture on the site is a otopus climbing a land tree. I believe the site was made as a joke and the facts have been made up.
Standards 1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:
b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources.
-- This standard was used in our class when it came time in a group of three to do a assignment where we created a short lesson plan for a class on torandos. The reason it was like a world life experence we might find in our future while teaching is because each group had to accomplish the same over all task while having some problems to face. These problems were mostly what supplies we had for our class. Our class did not have computers to be able to use in order to find research. So the way my group solved this problem was by having our students use the school library for research, this way they would not need a computor. This could really happen to us becuase maybe oneday the sever goes down and my class needs to do research.
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. Teachers:
c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students' diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources.
-- the way we used this in our classroom during this semester is by the different activities we learned in order to help our students learn. We were given new options such as games, smart board, fake social media sites, cell phone quiz, and others. No every student is going to learn the same and as students ourselves we all understand this fact. And technology has helped to even give us more options. Diverse in learing is something i want to be able to give to all my students in order for them all to be able to learn in the best way possible.
3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers:
b.
collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation.
--- the best example of this standard that we have used during this semester is our wiki page. This page gives each one of us the chances to do school work and homework on this page for everyone else in the class to see. We are also able to blog with one another on here to give feed back and ask questions. This is most likely the most interaction i have had with other students outside the classroom while ive been in college. Almost every assignment leads to interaction.
4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers:
a.
advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources.
--- You have shown us through our class period on computer use and legal reasoning that we have to be active in controlling our students online use. You should us a local schools computer contract they give to all students which stats both teacher and student rules. WE have to understand both our own responsibilities while also making sure our students understand theirs. We also have to be able to watch over our students and enforce any time of rule breaking on the computer. This will be something i will have to face when i finally have my own classroom.
5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. Teachers:
b.
exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared decision making and community building, and developing the leadership and technology skills of others.
--- I feel a good example of this again is our small groups and presentation/ final project. We had to work together all of us giving ideas and helping to perfect other peoples. Then each of us also had to take five minutes during the presentation to show our leadership in the classroom and what we have added to the presentation. This will also be a common practice when will become teachers. Not only we will still use this idea learning with other teachers but we will also be able to use it on our own students helping them to learn new information.
Reflection
Overall this course was diffidently very interesting for me. I learned many new tools that i will be able to put into effect for my own students. Ive never really thought about how diverse technology can make the learning experience inside a classroom. Before this class my main ideas were, lecture, games, movies, readings, smart book. Now i know a wide verity of different way i can have my students learn. I also never knew how to create my own quiz or rubric, both of which will be greatly need when i have my own class. Overall i have found this class to be very interesting and helpful moving forward to my future goals.
